Republicans Take Two Seats On the Ocean County Freeholder Board

Veteran John P. Kelly elected to another term, Virginia Haines wins her first.

Longtime Ocean County Freeholder John P. Kelly was re-elected to his eighth term on the freeholder board, despite many problems that cropped up over the past several years.

Kelly, a Republican, was first elected to the board in 1992, when he first one a seat with running mate James F. Lacey. He received 146,780, or 31.84 percent.

Virginia M. Haines - who was appointed when Lacey retired earlier this year - was elected to her first full term. She was the top vote getter with 148,109, or 32.12 percent.

Democrats Edward Wolfe and Michael B. Cooke received 78,598 votes and 74,631 votes respectively.

Independent challenger John Novak - who is also mayor of Barnegat - received 12,713 votes.
