Rip Current Risk Drops, But Surf Still Rough

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ - For the first time in nearly a week, the rip current risk on Ocean County beaches has dropped from high to moderate.

But that doesn't mean you can let your guard down. Rip currents are possible anytime, anyplace. Always check with your local beach patrol for problem areas. Never, ever swim on an unguarded beach and never swim alone or at night. Too many people have drowned in the ocean this summer. Don't add your name to the list.

Even though the rip current risk has dropped slightly, the surf will still be choppy. Waves of 6 feet are predicted, with southeasterly swells of 4 to feet. The ocean water temperature is 74 degrees. The NWS suggests you bring a flotation device with you in the water.

Skies today will be mostly cloudy, with some patchy fog. There's a chance of showers with possible thunderstorms and drizzle. Highs today will be in the lower 80s. Winds will be from the southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. The lightning threat is low, which means there is little chance of thunderstorms.

The ultraviolet index is a 9 despite the clouds, which the NWS considers very high. So don't forget the sunscreen.

High tide at Barnegat Inlet arrived at 7:32 a.m. Low tide will roll in at 1:38 p.m., followed by another high tide at 7:48 p.m.
