Rough Surf, Thunderstorms Likely On Ocean County Beaches

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ - Beachgoers could find themselves running for cover today, since the National Weather Service says is showers and thunderstorms are likely.

Skies will start out partly sunny, with highs in the lower 80s. Winds will be from the southwest at 15 miles per hour. The lightning threat is high. You'll also have to contend with rough surf and a moderate risk of rip currents. Waves today will be from 4 to 5 feet high, with southerly swells of 3 to 4 feet. The ocean water temperature is 75 degrees, but that can vary from beach to beach.

Check with your local beach patrol before heading into the water. Never, ever swim on an unguarded beach and never swim alone or at night. A number of people have already drowned on Jersey Shore beaches this summer. Don't add your name to the list.

The ultraviolet index is a 9, which the NWS considers very high. Don't forget the sunscreen or you'll pay for it tonight.

Low tide at Barnegat Inlet arrived at 6:13 a.m. High tide will roll in at 12:11 p.m., followed by another low tide at 6:25 p.m.
