Light Snow Causes Multiple Crashes in Bernardsville

Basking Ridge and Bedminster residents among those in five reported accidents on slick roads.

Even without appreciable accumulations this week, a slick covering of snow topped by an icy rain made driving bad enough on twisting, hilly borough roads to apparently cause five accidents reported to borough police in the last few days.

Two of the accidents took place within 10 minutes of each other on Meeker Road during Wednesday evening's snow and slushy storm, according to police reports.

Police Lt. Demmings Hoadley said that Reid Marston of Basking Ridge was heading on Pill Hill Road in the direction of Meeker Road, but reportedly was unable to stop at the intersection of both roads because of slick road conditions. Marston's car apparently slid across the road and struck a tree at about 4:44 p.m., Hoadley said.

Bernardsville police, the fire company and first aid squad all responded to the scene of the accident, in which Marston reportedly suffered minor injuries, according to police reports.

While police and rescue responders were at the scene of that accident, another driver, Nicholas Mahon of Bedminster, apparently was heading downhill on Meeker Road in the direction of Route 202, when he lost control of his car, and crossed over the road before hitting a tree at about 4:52 p.m., according to borough police reports. Mahon, too, suffered minor injuries, borough police said.

Three accidents reported on Christmas Eve

Other driving mishaps, without reported injuries, also were reported during Tuesday night's snowfall, Hoadley said.

At 8:31 p.m. on Tuesday, a vehicle driven by John Snyder of Bernardsville was heading west on Tower Mountain Road in the direction of Mendham Road, when it slid across the roadway and hit a mailbox at 52 Tower Mountain Road, Hoadley said. Borough police responded, he said.

At about 8:39 p.m. on Tuesday, a vehicle driven by Gilbert Carrera of Flemington was traveling south on Mendham Road when it slid across the road and hit a stone wall at 360 Mendham Road, borough police reports said.

Michael Treanor, Jr. of Bernardsville slid off the road and hit a tree in the vicinity of Mendham and Ballentine roads at 9:11 p.m., Hoadley said. Police also responded to that accident, and no injuries were reported for that incident either, he said.
