Scrabble Tournament Aims to Spell End to Hunger

Bernardsville Democrats holding contest and collection for food bank this Sunday at Bernardsville Public Library.

There's a call out this weekend to game and word lovers over age 16 prepare to shake their tile bags and test their brains while helping to contribute food donations during the this Sunday's Scrabble tournament, "Spell an End to Hunger," scheduled to be held at the Bernardsville Public Library.

The second annual tournament is organized by the Bernardsville Democratic Committee, and is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the library at 1 Anderson Hill Road in Bernardsville.

The public event is free and open to area Scrabble players of all levels over the age of 16.

Participants are encouraged to bring an item to donate to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.

Registration is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., followed by the pairing of players and review of tournament rules. Games begin at 1:30 pm.

Contestants will play two games each and enjoy refreshments and friendly competition. Prizes will be awarded, including one for the highest scoring word.

All items donated will benefit the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. Bins will be provided for collection.

Those attending are asked to bring canned items such as fruit, vegetables, meats, fish, soup, hot and cold cereal, peanut butter, jelly, and non-refrigerated juice and milk.

The Food Bank also is in need of deodorant, hand soap, diapers, wipes, dish and laundry detergents, toothpaste, shampoo, paper towels and toilet paper.

Tournament organizer Pat Wry is a language arts teacher, avid Scrabble player and committee member of the Bernardsville Democrats.

Through "Spell an End to Hunger," she said and fellow committee members hope to facilitate rousing Scrabble games while raising awareness for a charity close to home. During the cold winter months, the Food Bank Network of Somerset County needs donations more than ever. Following the tournament, the Bernardsville Democratic Committee will transport the collection to the Food Bank as part of the organization's commitment to supporting the community, according to the announcement from the Bernardsville Democrats.

According to the committee, last year’s Scrabble tournament was a success, and numerous items were donated to the food bank.
