New School Calendar Approved in Somerset Hills
First day of school is the Friday after Labor Day, three snow days built into calendar.
The Somerset Hills school district's first day of school in fall 2013 will be the Friday, Sept. 6 — four days after Labor Day on Sept. 2 — and graduation and the last day of the school year is scheduled to fall on Thursday, June 19, according to the 2013-14 school calendar approved Wednesday night by the Somerset Hills Board of Education.
The schedule also includes three built-in snow days, as well as a list of backup holidays on which students would report if those three days are exceeded — as happened this year after Hurricane Irene, said Schools Superintendent Peter Miller.
The spring vacation built into the calendar is April 14 to 18, 2014, Miller said.

The three days built into the calendar are April 21, the Monday following the spring vacation, and May 23 to 27, before and after Memorial Day.
If no emergency closure days are used, students would get those days off from school, Miller said.

Students would attend school on April 21 if school is closed for one day next year on an emergency basis, with May 23 and 27 to follow, he said.
If there is a fourth day, students will attend school on the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, now included as a day off next Jan. 20.
Additional makeup days, if needed, would be scheduled Feb. 14, Feb. 17 and during spring recess, starting with April 14, according to the approved holiday.
Note: A previous version of this article said the first day of school is Sept. 5, but that day is a scheduled day off for Rosh Hashanah.
