Brookdale Fifth Grader Becomes Principal for the Day

Student became temporary top school administrator after parents' donation.

This month, Anthony Rizzi had a school day most students only dream of.

On Wednesday, April 10, Brookdale 5th grader Rizzi became his school's Principal.

Anthony spent the day shadowing Mr. Fleres and observed classrooms, ate lunch with the office staff and held a meeting with Superintendent Jason Bing.

Rizzi's family won the opportunity by bidding on a basket sponsored by Brookdale Principal Joseph Fleres at the Brookdale Beef Steak fundraiser dinner. The basket raised $325 for the school and earned Anthony the chance to learn about the responsibilities and perks of being a principal.

As Principal, Rizzi mostly resisted the temptation to mandate mischief. One notable exception: he issued a proclamation that all teachers should assign less homework for that evening.
