Beach Vehicle Permits Set To Increase Under Proposed Brick Ordinance

The Township Council is scheduled to introduce the ordinance at Tuesday's meeting.

BRICK, NJ — The Brick Township Council is scheduled to introduce an ordinance on Tuesday that will increase the availability of beach driving permits for the township's beaches.

The permits allow vehicles to be driven on the beaches from Oct. 1 through April 30 as long as they meet certain requirements.

Beach vehicles, often referred to as beach buggies, are a popular way for anglers to access areas for surf fishing and are typically vehicles equipped with four-wheel drive, such as pickup trucks, SUVs, or Jeeps. Driving on the beach in Brick is only permitted when the beaches are closed before and after the summer season.

The township has limited permit sales to 125 for several years, but they have sold out more quickly each year.

Under the proposed ordinance, the limit will be increased to 200 permits.

Permits are only issued after a vehicle passes the safety inspection for driving on the beach, which typically requires safety gear. The New Jersey Beach Buggy Association offers a list of items recommended for those who are driving on the beach along with information about safely driving along the shore to avoid getting stuck in the sand and other mishaps.

Brick Township posts notices when the inspections and permit process opens for the fall.
