Brick American 8U All-Stars Win Cal Ripken District Championship

BRICK, NJ — The Brick American 8U All-Star baseball team captured the Cal Ripken District 1 championship.

The team won the District 1 championship on June 24, beating Hopewell Valley 13-1 in 3-1/2 innings at the Hamilton Little Lads complex in Hamilton Township, and advanced to the Cal Ripken Southern New Jersey state tournament.

In the District 1 title game, pitcher Liam Rossi struck out nine and gave up just three hits in 54 pitches, team manager Peter Burgess said. Rossi did not walk any batters. Catcher Owen Prendergast held back the baserunners, allowing two stolen bases.

Brick American scored 12 runs in the first inning, sending 16 batters to the plate. Four Brick hitters were walked, including two on full-counts.

Peter Moberg drove in two runs with the team's first hit, and Prendergast followed with a single. Mateo Hernandez and Danny Curcione each doubled, and Stevan Ferullo drove in the last RBI of the first inning with a single.

In the third inning, Prendergast singled and then was brought in for the 13th run on two fielder's choice plays, Burgess said.

Brendan Tirpack, Braden Gilmore, Nick Poole, Madix Musolf, Austin Veltre and Andrew Burgess all contributed with solid defense in the title game and tallied hits, RBIs, or scored in the first 2 games as Brick went 3-0 in the tournament staying in the winners bracket.

In the Southern New Jersey Cal Ripken state tournament, Brick American beat Marlton 18-14 in the team's first game of the state tournament, but fell to Cherry Hill National 12-5 on Sunday.

On Monday evening Brick American faced Cinnaminson in a losers bracket game. Cinnaminson edged Brick, 9-6.
