A routine check-up after an unusual symptom led 77-year-old Joe Doherty to an unexpected discovery: a mass in his lung. For a man who had spent the last seven years as the sole caregiver for his wife, Mary, this news could have been devastating. However, Joe's unwavering faith and the expertise of his medical team turned a moment of uncertainty into a testament to hope and advanced medical care.
Joe, an active parishioner at the Church of St. Dominic in Brick, was initially seen at the Ocean Care Center for a completely unrelated issue. A CT scan, however, revealed a "squishy" lung mass, despite him having no respiratory symptoms. He was then referred to Rachel NeMoyer, M.D. a thoracic surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, part of the Hackensack Meridian Health network.
Dr. NeMoyer recommended an innovative, robot-assisted lung resection. This minimally invasive procedure was ideal for Joe's specific condition, a benign lung mass with a ground glass opacity that made it difficult to see on scans. The surgery was a success, and Joe was back home the next day with minimal discomfort, deeply impressed by the compassionate care he received from every staff member he encountered.
Today, Joe is cancer-free and has found a renewed sense of purpose within his church community. His journey highlights the incredible advancements in thoracic surgery and the profound impact of a positive outlook and a dedicated medical team.
