Scammers Claiming To Be Police Targeting Brick Residents: Police

Scammers are claiming there are federal arrest warrants out for the victims and demanding money, police said.

BRICK, NJ — Brick Township police are warning residents to be aware of a telephone scam asking for money after claiming victims are wanted for a major crime.

In the scam, the callers identify themselves as members of law enforcement then tell the victim there is a federal arrest warrant out and they've been charged with a major crime, police said.

The caller then asks the victim for payment and banking information, police said.

"Police officers will NEVER call you and ask for money or your personal banking information over the phone," Brick Township police said. "Hang up immediately, and notify the Brick Township Police Department at 732-262-1100."

The police department also warned that just because a call looks like it is coming from the police department or other law enforcement does not mean that is the source.

"There are apps that can alter phone numbers and make it look like you are getting a call from the police when in reality, it is not the police department. If you are suspicious of any phone call, hang up," police said. Then look up the number for the law enforcement agency and call to confirm.
