Fake Cop Is Pulling Cars Over In Unmarked Car, Real NJ Police Say
Police issued a warning to drivers and offered tips to determine if the person is a legitimate police officer:
READINGTON, NJ — Police are warning drivers in Hunterdon County of reports of a person impersonating a police officer who is pulling over cars in an unmarked vehicle.
"The Readington Township Police Department is aware of suspicious incidents reported in neighboring jurisdictions involving an individual impersonating a police officer while operating an unmarked vehicle and directing motorists to stop," said police on Friday.
Police said they have also received information that a similar incident may have occurred in Readington Township.

Police offered tips for drivers if they are being stopped and are unsure whether the person is a legitimate police officer:

- Remain in your vehicle and slow down
- Activate your hazard lights to acknowledge the stop
- Call 9-1-1 immediately and advise the dispatcher of your location and the situation
- Follow the dispatcher’s instructions. A marked police unit can be sent to your location to verify the stop
Anyone who believes they have been contacted by a police impersonator is urged to report the incident immediately.
