From the Big Screen to the Stage
Checking out an adaptation of a holiday classic is just one thing to do around the area this weekend.

This weekend, we're introducing a new feature that we hope will make your downtime even better. We know you've been there before, because we have too.
Whether you're trying to avoid another lazy Saturday or Sunday on the couch, or you are so busy that you haven't had a chance to find out that the event you've been waiting for all year is happening this weekend, this feature is for you.
So, without further interruption, we bring you the first 5 Things to Do This Weekend. You'll find this first edition to be very holiday oriented. More information on the events and addresses for the venues can be found by clicking the links.

- Story Time With Mrs. Claus–Mrs. Claus will meet with children while reading holiday favorites and giving out toys on Friday, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event is being held at the in the Santa Set in the center of the mall.
- A Christmas Story–Performing what has become a modern classic, the Somerset Valley Players will put on productions at the Somerset Valley Playhouse on Friday and Saturday nights at 8. There will also be productions at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for senior citizens and students. - Christmas Music Day–A nice event for younger families. Held at the St. James Roman Catholic Church in Basking Ridge, attendees can expect music, stories and different activities for young children. The event is being held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the pastoral center. Those who wish to attend should register online here, or call 908-766-1721. Each family will receive a small gift.
- Holiday Boutique–People can head to the Wagner Farm Arboretum in Warren Friday through Sunday for this event. On Friday and Saturday, the boutique will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Items offered for sale are created by local artisans and craft makers. Items for sale, according to the event's listing, will include pottery, jewelry, oil/water color paintings, hand-blown glassware, nature photographs, botanical collages, candies, local honey, birdhouses and a variety of holiday ornaments. The event says the arboretum is a non-profit organization, and will accept cash or checks for purchases. For more information, call 908-350-7383.
- Outdoor Education for the Season–Lord Stirling Park's environmental education center in Basking Ridge is the site of two educational opportunities this weekend. On Saturday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., registered individuals 8 and older can find out how animals keep warm and dry during the cold months. Also to be discussed, according to the event listing, will be historical fiber usage and a craft involving an introduction to knitting and weaving. On Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., registered children ages 4 to 6 will be accompanied by a naturalist to learn all about owls. Registration for both events can be done online, or by calling 908-766-2489. Advanced payment of $9 is required for both sessions.
