Rep. Tom Malinowski To Address Spread Of Extremism Online

SOMERVILLE, NJ — Rep. Tom Malinowski will host a virtual forum Friday to discuss the threats posed by white nationalism, anti-Semitism and other forms of extremism online.

He will be joined by Elizabeth Neumann, who served in the Trump administration as Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism and Threat Prevention at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

“Extremist groups spreading hate and disinformation online threaten the safety of Americans and the integrity of our democracy,” said Rep. Malinowski. “I look forward to sharing with constituents how I am taking concrete action at the federal level to address this growing problem, and hearing from constituents about their concerns."

Rep. Malinowski has been an outspoken critic of large social media platforms and their algorithmic amplification of harmful, conspiratorial content. Earlier this month, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution introduced by Rep. Malinowski to condemn QAnon, a movement promoting a collection of unfounded conspiracy theories that have spread widely on the internet since 2017.

In September, he hosted a public forum with leading experts to discuss the proliferation of conspiracy theories and misinformation online and how to guard against them.

In January, he hosted an Interfaith Security Briefing for local faith leaders. The briefing featured former Assistant Secretary Neumann, who gave an overview of services available from state and federal law enforcement to better prepare houses of worship to handle potential security threats.
