Violent Storm Fells Trees, Knocks Out Power

Poor weather expected to continue Tuesday.

The effects of a brief but violent thunderstorm on Monday morning were still being felt Monday afternoon.

The storm’s most serious effects were in the southwestern part of the township as crews from Public Service Electric and Gas were still working along Milltown Road where trees had fallen across power lines on Monday afternoon.

PSE&G reported that no more than 500 customers were without power at 5 p.m. During the storm, power outages were more widespread.

A downed tree closed Old York Road west of Milltown Road at the height of the storm around 9 a.m. Monday, police said. Trees were also reported down on Country Club Road.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning until 9 p.m. The Raritan River in the Bradley Gardens area at 5 p.m. was 8.79 feet with a crest predicted at 9.6 feet at midnight, just below the 10-foot flood stage. 

The National Weather Service is predicting the squally weather to continue through the week, with a 90 percent chance of precipitation on Tuesday falling to 30 percent on Thursday.
