CHATHAM, NJ — Before and after Ida made its way through New Jersey towns including Chatham, there were warnings posted about the dangers of even attempting to navigate flooded roadways.

Chatham Borough’s “Flood Facts” post the day of the storm, reminded people that six inches of moving water could whisk away an adult on foot, while a foot of water could do the same with a car.

Three drivers, however, decided to chance it, two of them driving through Chatham Township’s closed Central Avenue at some point after the storm, according to the township’s police department’s Facebook post on Friday.

The police department reminded people with that post, why they need to avoid roads that are closed by flooding.

“These two vehicles became disabled in the water on Central Avenue,” Chatham Police Department reported about the photo.

“Another driver needed to be rescued by the Chatham Township Fire Department, because they ignored the road closed signs and became disabled in the water.”

The police department concluded its post with a stern, “Stay off closed roadways,” in response.
