Board of Ed to Recognize CHS Girl Scout

Scout convinced Dyson to donate hand dryers to Chatham High.

will recognize the efforts of Sophie Kapica, a junior who brought hand dryers to .

Kapica did her Girl Scout Gold Project on "paper-saving," according to her troop leader Dian Lamb. As part of her project, she convinced Dyson, Ltd. to donate six hand dryers for bathrooms in Chatham High.

"If used, the hand dryer will have a 70 percent smaller carbon footprint than the paper towels [formerly] in the bathrooms," Lamb said.

Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe will recognize Kapica during his report to the board Monday.

The board will vote Monday on whether to award the project to CJ Vanderbeck, on the recommendation of the district's architect.

Staff Changes

The board will vote on several resignations Monday, including:

  • Vicky Chu, Chinese teacher, resignation effective June 30
  • Oliver Villamarin, district floater custodian, effective May 3
  • Linda Barnett, paraprofessional, effective June 30
  • Filomena Cullen, paraprofessional, effective June 30
  • Betsy Mirabelli, paraprofessional, effective June 30
  • Margaret Moir, paraprofessional, effective June 30
  • Pauline Bliss, nursing assistant, effective May 25

Two contracts for Jeffrey Meano, a custodian, will also be voted on. One, Jeffrey Meano, would serve as a floating custodian during the month of June, and the second hires him from July 1 through June 30, 2012.

The board will also vote on a contract to make Quinten Burgunder a summer custodian earning $9 per hour. As his father, Board Member Al Burgunder said he will abstain from voting on this item.
