Chatham Police: Community Policing Now In Action

The Chatham Township Police Department is taking steps to improve communication and secure partnerships between police officers and local residents.

The department has established a Community Policing initiative that divides the township into ten Community Policing districts. Each district has been assigned one police officer that serves as the direct contact for all residents in that district, Chatham Police Unit Leader, Officer Michael Bloom outlined in a statement.

Officer Bloom described the initiative as a “fundamental shift from traditional, reactive policing,” noting that the effort will help Chatham Police take a proactive approach to crime prevention.

“Community policing stresses the prevention of crime and other quality of life issues before they occur,” Bloom stated. “We believe that the core component of community policing is the partnership between our officers and the people they serve.”

Chatham Police Officers will communicate with residents via email, providing up to date information on local crime, as well as safety and crime prevention tips, according to the statement.
