Cops: Driver Fled After Crashing Into Pole

Several summonses were issued to the teenage driver.

Chatham Borough Police responded to the area of Kimball Street and Van Doren Avenue at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday on a reported car accident, according to a statement released Thursday.

Upon arrival, they found a 2002 BMW was traveling north on Kimball Street sheared off a utility pole, continued on and struck a 2007 Toyota parked in the driveway of 12 Kimball St., police said.

When police arrived on the scene, the driver of the BMW had already fled the scene, according to police.

After an extensive investigation, it was determined that the driver was  17-year-old boy from the neighborhood, police said.

The driver was charged with failure to keep right, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and violation of restrictions on a provisional license, according to police.

The driver was released pending municipal court action, police said.
