UPDATE: Phone Service Restored to Boro Police Dept.
The siren for the fire department has been disabled.

Lt. Brian Gibbons of the confirmed the department's main phone line is working once again.
"They routed calls into the [alternative] line," Gibbons said, allowing residents who call the main line at (973) 635-8000 to reach the police department through the line ending in 8001.

"Verizon was working on it from the time it was reported," Gibbons said. "They're still continuing to do some work on the back end, and that will maybe take an additional day or two."
There is no information available on the cause of the malfunction, but police think the issue also caused the emergency siren at the to sound without cause.

"It's not used for anything anymore anyhow, except for the noon whistle ... [and] emergency notification, if it should be needed," Fire Chief Peter Glogolich said.
The siren has been shut off until the malfunction is fully resolved. "It'll be up and running eventually," Glogolich said. "We just have to figure out what made it short in the first place."
Gibbons said residents who require police assistance can call the department's regular line again. He also said the department never lost their routing services for emergency 911 calls.
