Man Who Killed Wife Dies By Suicide In Camden Co. Jail: Authorities

The man was found guilty of first-degree murder the day before he was found dead.

CAMDEN, NJ — A Voorhees man died by suicide in his jail cell the day after getting convicted of murdering his wife, authorities said Wednesday.

Shawn Lichtfuss, 53, recently stood trial for the August 2021 homicide of his wife, Stefanie Caraway. A jury found him guilty Sept. 18 of first-degree murder. Read more: Man Found Guilty Of Killing His Wife In Camden Co.

A sentencing date was to be determined.

Officers were conducting a cell check when they found Lichtfuss unresponsive around 11:20 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Camden County Correctional Facility. He was pronounced dead via telemetry about 20 minutes later, authorities said.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office, which investigated Lichtfuss's death, was alerted minutes later. A medical examiner conducted an autopsy and found that Lichtfuss died by suicide.

The state Attorney General's Office will review the investigative findings.
