Man Accused Of Shooting Camden Co. Police Officer Gets IDed

The suspect and the officer were both hospitalized after the exchange of gunfire, authorities said.

CAMDEN, NJ — A Camden County police officer and a suspect were hospitalized after an exchange of gunfire Tuesday night, authorities said.

Officers tried to conduct a pedestrian stop with a man around 10:50 p.m. near Chesapeake Road and Congress Road in Camden, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. It wasn't immediately clear what prompted the stop.

During that time, the man — later identified as Marques Jones, 25, of Camden — pointed a handgun toward an officer and shot multiple times, authorities said. The officer, who authorities haven't publicly identified, was shot in the left arm, according to prosecutors.

Attorney information for Jones wasn't immediately available in online court records.

The injured officer is part of the Camden County Police Department, which conducts local law enforcement for the City of Camden.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office is overseeing the investigation into the shootings and receiving guidance from the New Jersey Attorney General's Office on investigating police shootings.
