Man's Body Still Missing After Camden Family Dismembered Him: Prosecutor

A man fatally shot the victim in June before the suspect's wife and son got a chainsaw and dismembered the victim's body, authorities said.

CAMDEN, NJ — The body of a South Jersey man who was killed and dismembered in Camden four months ago remains missing, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Three members of the same Camden family were charged last month in the death of Harold “Hal” Miller Jr., who was last seen June 12. Authorities suspect that Everton Thomas fatally shot Miller that day, before the suspect's wife and son dismembered the victim's body with a chainsaw and drove his remains elsewhere.

On Wednesday, investigators asked the public for information that could help them find Miller's remains.

"We’re asking for the public’s help in locating the body of Mr. Miller so we can bring answers to his grieving family," said Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay. "Any information, no matter how small, could be the key to bringing them peace and helping us deliver justice. The family has suffered enough — it’s time to help bring their loved one home."

Miller, 48, of Deptford, entered Thomas's house on the morning of June 12. But surveillance footage never showed him leaving, authorities said.

Sherrie Parker and Deshawn Thomas — Everton Thomas's wife and son — bought a chainsaw, containers, trash bags and other cleaning supplies in the ensuing days, authorities said.

Parker, 41, and Deshawn Thomas, 23, made several trips to the Tamarack Apartments dumpsters in Camden, authorities said. Then, they loaded several containers and trash bags into a vehicle before leaving the city, according to prosecutors.

Detectives searched the family's home on June 20. Everton Thomas was questioned that day but released from custody without charges.

He fled to Canada the next day and remained there until Sept. 8, when he was arrested while trying to return to the United States on a commercial bus, authorities said.

Everton Thomas, 41, was charged with first-degree murder. He, Parker and Deshawn Thomas were also charged with second-degree desecration of human remains and fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence.

All three defendants remain jailed at the Camden County Correctional Facility after a judge ruled to keep them detained pretrial.
