The air could be unhealthy for children, the elderly and sensitive groups, officials said.

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — An air quality alert for Burlington County is in effect for Friday.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued a code orange alert, meaning air within the region may become unhealthy for children, the elderly and people with heart disease, asthma or other lung diseases.

Health impacts can be minimized by avoiding outdoor exercise or strenuous activity, officials said.

Camden and Gloucester counties are also under code orange alerts for Friday — same with the rest of metro Philadelphia and portions of North and Central Jersey.

Meanwhile, forecasters expect thunderstorms on Friday night that will lead into a heatwave next week.

Here's the National Weather Service's latest Burlington County forecast:

  • Friday: Mostly sunny. A chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Hot with highs in the lower 90s. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.
  • Friday night: Mostly cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly in the evening. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall in the evening. Lows in the mid 60s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph, becoming north after midnight. Chance of rain 70 percent.
  • Saturday: Sunny, hot with highs in the mid 80s. North winds 5 to 10 mph.
  • Saturday night: Mostly clear. Lows in the upper 50s. North winds 5 to 10 mph.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 80s.
