Adversaries Get Into Shootout While Toddler Plays Outside In BurlCo: Prosecutor

The suspects turned a neighborhood's streets into a 'shooting gallery' as they ran and exchanged gunfire, authorities said.

BURLINGTON, NJ — Two adversaries got into a shootout in a Burlington County neighborhood, opening fire as a toddler played outside and taking the battle through several residential streets several weeks ago, authorities said.

Shaun Causey and Jamaar White fired multiple shots at each other on the afternoon of June 9 in Burlington City, authorities said. The city residents fired rounds while running along Bordentown and Columbus roads, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

Both men were arrested last week.

A 2-year-old was playing outside when the gunfire began, authorities said. One round went through the wall of a house, and another pierced a parked vehicle during the exchange.

Neither suspect was directly shot, but White's arm was grazed.

Both men are in custody after they were each charged with aggravated assault and various weapons offenses — all second-degree charges.

White, 32, was arrested June 16 in Burlington City. He was placed in Burlington County Jail and had a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Causey, 38, was apprehended Wednesday in Greenville, North Carolina. He is awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

"Neighborhoods throughout Burlington County are populated by law-abiding, hard-working citizens who are simply trying to enjoy life and raise their children in a safe environment," said County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw. "Those who treat public streets as shooting galleries to settle personal vendettas, as these two defendants chose to do, will be swiftly caught and fully punished for their reckless behavior."

Neither suspect had an attorney listed in online court records on Tuesday.
