Severe Thunderstorm Warning For Burlington Co.: 60 MPH Gusts, Hail Possible

Weather officials advised people to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building​.

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — Officials issued a severe thunderstorm warning Tuesday afternoon for northwestern Burlington County. The warning runs until 4 p.m., but stormy weather could persist through the evening.

Northwest Burlington County includes both Cinnaminson and Moorestown.

At 3:16 p.m., officials detected a severe thunderstorm over Rockledge, Pennsylvania — 7 miles northeast of Philadelphia — moving east at 25 mph. The severe storm could bring 60 mph gusts and penny-size hail.

The warning area also includes southwestern Mercer County, along with parts of Eastern Pennsylvania: northeastern Philadelphia County and the southeastern portions of Montgomery and Bucks counties.

The wind could damage roofs, siding, trees and power lines.

"For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building," the National Weather Service's warning says.

A severe thunderstorm watch for all of New Jersey remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Frequent lightning may be possible during that time — along with scattered gusts up to 70 mph and isolated hail up to the size of ping pong balls, according to the National Weather Service.

Here's the National Weather Service's latest forecast for northwestern Burlington County:

  • Tuesday afternoon: Showers likely with a chance of thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds, small hail, and frequent lightning. Hot. Near steady temperature in the mid-80s. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60 percent.
  • Tuesday night: Mostly cloudy in the evening, then becoming partly cloudy. A chance of showers. A chance of thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds, small hail, and frequent lightning in the evening. Humid with lows in the mid-60s. Southwest winds around 5 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.
  • Wednesday: Sunny, hot with highs around 90. Southwest winds around 5 mph.
