In the 1865, Hezekiah B. Smith and his wife Agnes Gilkerson Smith, purchased the property. Hezekiah, an inventor and industrialist, was the owner of a wood working machine company and operated the factory which built the first “American Star Bicycle” of which is on display within the museum.

Guided tours by docents begin at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. Tours will include the Mansion and Annex of the Smithville Mansion. There is also a Schoolhouse Museum on the property. The complete tour takes about an hour and a half.

This year’s theme, “Experience America,” celebrates “the return to, and resurgence of, our country's diverse cultural experiences,” following closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a news release.

The purpose of Museum Day, according to a release, is to promote equal access to the wide array of museums in the United States, especially among children and underrepresented communities.

Museum-goers can head to the Museum Day website to download their ticket. Each ticket grants the ticket holder and one guest free, timed access to any participating museum. One ticket is permitted per email address.
