The flood threat could extend to communities along the Delaware River, according to weather officials.

CINNAMINSON, NJ — New Jersey's coastal communities, including Cinnaminson, should brace for flood impacts as Hurricane Erin travels up the Atlantic coast, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.

Life-threatening rip currents are expected along the Jersey Shore, while coastal flooding could extend up the Delaware River, the NWS said.

"If you live near areas prone to coastal flooding, now is the time to prepare and protect your property from the flooding," the agency said Wednesday morning. "Secure any lose outdoor items from the strong winds."

Coastal hazards in the region are expected through Friday, beginning with a separate storm system hitting the state Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to weather officials.

On Wednesday, there will be a small chance of isolated flash flooding — especially in urbanized areas and by small streams and creeks, the NWS says.

The coastal threat will peak Thursday as Hurricane Erin passes by offshore, with the possibility of coastal flooding looming through Friday night's high tide, according to the NWS.

Minor coastal flooding is expected in Delaware River communities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) isn't predicting coastal flooding in the Cinnaminson area as of this writing. But weather officials are advising the public to keep up with forecasts for changing conditions.

Meanwhile, Cinnaminson could get gusts as high as 30 mph on Thursday.

Here's the National Weather Service's latest forecast for Cinnaminson as of 2 p.m. Wednesday:

  • Wednesday afternoon: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Wednesday night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Thursday: A slight chance of showers after 8 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72. Northeast wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
  • Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 60. North wind 10 to 15 mph.
  • Friday: Sunny, with a high near 82. North wind around 10 mph.
  • Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 60.
  • Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 83.
