Clark Teacher Suffers From Head + Chest Trauma After Car Accident: Police

The teacher was hit by a car while jogging in Garwood on Thursday, police said.

GARWOOD, NJ — Michael Charatan, a math teacher at Arthur L Johnson High School in Clark, was hit by a car while jogging in Garwood on Thursday, according to police.

Garwood Police said a tan Ford SUV made a left turn from North Avenue onto Walnut Street at about 5:37 p.m. when it hit Charatan who was jogging in a marked crosswalk.

Charatan was treated at the scene by Garwood First Aid Squad and paramedics who then rushed him to University Hospital in Newark with head and chest trauma, police said.

The Garwood Police Department is actively investigating the crash and no charges have been filed at this time.

Preliminary findings do not suggest that speed, impairment or distracted driving were factors in the incident, police said.
