Expect Lane Closure On Route 22 In Union Co. Tuesday Night: NJDOT

The lane closure is due to construction work on the bridge over Echo Lake in Mountainside, according to NJDOT.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — The left lane on Route 22 eastbound will be closed Tuesday night from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14, according to an announcement from NJDOT.

The lane will be closed just before the exit ramp to Mountain Avenue/Westfield through Locust Avenue in Mountainside.

In addition, the left lane on Route 22 westbound will be closed at the same time between Walnut Avenue and the first U-turn ramp from Route 22 westbound to Route 22 eastbound, which was closed in November.

NJDOT said The lane closures are necessary to pave and stripe a temporary roadway in the median.

At least one lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions overnight. Drivers are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays or plan an alternate route.

By 6 a.m. Wednesday, all traffic on Route 22 eastbound will be shifted to the left onto the temporary roadway, to reconstruct the culvert under the eastbound lanes. In addition, the left lane on Route 22 westbound will be reopened to traffic. If work is completed sooner, the road will reopen earlier, NJDOT said.

This work is part of a $9 million federally-funded project to replace the culvert under the Route 22 Bridge over Echo Lake in Mountainside. The project will be done in stages in order to maintain all travel lanes throughout the project, which is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
