Wegmans Scammer Tried 'Pigeon Drop', Police Say

Cherry Hill police warn shoppers to be alert for similar confidence schemes.

A con artist tried to scam a senior citizen out of cash outside Wegmans last week, Cherry Hill Police said, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

The scammer, seen above, was a woman wearing dark clothing, a tan baseball cap and sunglasses. Police said she tried to pull what’s referred to as a “pigeon drop.”

She approached her would-be victim around 12:30 p.m. on May 24 with a bag purportedly filled with money, police said, then tried to convince her victim to withdraw cash as a good-faith gesture, with the promise of splitting the cash in the bag later.
