Cranford High State Champion Quarterback, Captain, Dies At 83

Anthony "Andy" Rogers led the 1954 team to victory before serving in the Army.

CRANFORD, NJ — Obituary provided by the Bailey Funeral Home:

Anthony "Andy" Rogers passed away on December 12, 2018. He was 83 years old.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to parents Anthony Andrew and Ethel Beatrice (nee Lied) Rogers, Andy grew up in Cranford, NJ, before moving to Long Valley in 1962 with his wife and high school sweetheart, Jan, where they built their first home. They settled in Chester in 1968 where they built another home.

Andy was the quarterback and captain of Cranford High School's football team which won the state championship in 1954. He served in the US Army from 1954-1962. Andy was the owner and operator of A. Rogers Construction Company, based in Chester. He was a builder of private and public properties in the Chester and Morris County area for over 50 years. Andy was a founding member of Chester Lions. He and Jan were married for 50 years; during that time they enjoyed many years of sailing and adventures on the water. They also spent many years at their niece's home in upstate NY where they never missed a holiday, sporting event or dance performance.
Andy was a history buff and avid reader. He volunteered at the Jersey Battered Women's Shelter as well as constantly helping a friend or family member with a building project.

Andy is predeceased by his loving wife, Jan Rogers; he is survived by his sister, Bea Stake (Stan), sister-in-law Marge Gavin, nieces Betty Gavin-Singer (Jack), Cyndi Stake, Deborah Dorber (Jeff), nephews Andrew Stake (Gail), David Stake (Nira), great nieces Rebecca Singer-Zhou (Nick), Martha Singer, great nephew Andrew Singer, great-great nephew Liam and the Robertson family.

Visitation will be held Monday, December 17th, from 10 am to 12 pm with a funeral service to follow, starting at 12 pm, at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd, Mendham. Interment will take place after services at the Mendham Hilltop Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Andy's name can be made to Jersey Battered Women's Services, 10 Court St, Morristown NJ 07960. www.baileyfuneral.com
