Free Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event For Union County Residents
Drivers and passengers must stay in their cars while staff unload the items.
UNION, NJ - The second-to-last free household hazardous waste disposal event for Union County residents of the year is taking place on Sept. 6.
Individuals with household chemicals listed below are invited to bring them to Kean University's Kean Hall Parking Lot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. All of the Union County recycling events are contact-free and solely drive-up accessible. Drivers and passengers must stay in their cars while staff unload the items.

Fireworks are no longer accepted. Ammunition, however, is eligible to be disposed. Latex paint is also not accepted.

- Aerosol cans
- Antifreeze
- Batteries
- Caustics
- Corrosives & cleaners
- Fire extinguishers
- Fluorescent bulbs (unbroken)
- Gasoline
- Mercury switches
- Motor oil & oil filters
- Oil based paints or varnishes
- Pesticides & herbicides
- Propane tanks
- Pool chemicals
- Smoke detectors
- Thermostats
- Tires (automobile, motorcycle, bicycle)
Not Accepted
- Water-based paints
- Alkaline batteries
- Unknown or unlabeled containers
- Empty containers
- Containers larger than five gallons
Unknown, or unidentified materials, explosives, radioactive materials and PCB’s are not eligible. Only material in original or labeled containers are cleared. All containers must be five gallons or less.
Tires
Each household is limited to eight automobile or bicycle tires. Rims will not be accepted.
Fluorescent Tube Recycling (CFL bulbs will not be accepted)
You may recycle 4' and 8' tubes at many of the municipal drop-off locations during certain time periods. There is a maximum of 12 bulbs per household.
