Man Sentenced For Deadly Shooting In Union County

The 25-year-old was sentenced in the death of a former football standout.

ELIZABETH, NJ - A 25-year-old Piscataway man was sentenced to 25 years in state prison following a 2023 shooting death in Union County.

Union County Superior Court Judge Candido Rodriguez Jr. sentenced Maurice Pierce on Friday for the fatal shooting of Jameer Outsey of Bridgewater in August 2023. Pierce was found guilty on charges of first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Pierce must serve at least 85 percent of of that sentence before being eligible for parole, announced the Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 12, Elizabeth Police went to the area of North Broad St. and Magnolia Ave. for reports of a man with a gunshot wound.

There, they found Outsey, who was then taken to a local hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead, according to Assistant Prosecutor Robert Grady. Pierce surrendered to the Elizabeth Police Department in late September 2023.

Outsey is a 2014 graduate of Franklin Township High School who went on to play Division I college football. He signed with the Iowa Hawkeyes after graduating from Franklin Township High School and then transferred to the University of Nevada - Las Vegas, according to his senior year football profile.

"We are grateful for the hard work of Assistant Prosecutor Robert Grady, Detective Sergeant Lewis King of Kean University Police Department, who was on loan to the UCPO Homicide Task Force, and Elizabeth Police Detective John Londono, on this case," said Daniel. "I hope this sentencing can bring some relief to those mourning Mr. Outsey."
