EBHS Grad Gears Up for Spring Training

Carl Thomore is getting ready for his second season playing professional baseball.

Carl Thomore doesn’t really set long term goals, but he knows what he wants to do—play Major League Baseball, and to do that he’ll have to work at the little things.

“I don’t really set long term goals, but my long term goal is to play in the majors,” he said last week. “What gets you there is making small goals , day to day goals. You make little goals for yourself and it adds up to the big picture.”

The East Brunswick High School graduate was drafted by the Colorado Rockies as the 77th pick in the Major League Baseball draft in June. Following graduation, he played with the Casper Ghosts in the Pioneer League where he played 43 games, batted .192, hit 8 doubles, three home runs, and had 25 RBI in 156 at bats.

“I had to rotate in with outfielders and wanted to get over 100 at bats. Once you’re over 100 you start seeing a difference,” he said. “Obviously, statistically speaking, I didn’t not doo well, but as long as I think I did well then I’m doing well”

Thomore said his numbers also are a reflection of the past year, when he was hampered by a knee injury suffered more than a year ago. Prior to his minor league debut, he only played 20 games for the East Brunswick High School team. During a normal year, he would have played upwards of 120 games between EBHS and travel teams.

On Monday, Thomore reported to spring training in Arizona with the Colorado Rockies, where he will play with minor leaguers and major leaguers.

During the offseason, Thomore hit the gym, training four times a week and doing speed and agility training with his father at TNT (Thomore and Thomore).

While he still has a long way to go, Thomore knows that he’s already achieved more on the diamond than most people.

“It was awesome,” he said about first stepping onto the field. “Just playing pro baseball was a dream of mine. Stepping on that field for the first time, I had a lot of butter flies. It was just a good experience.”

And beginning this week, Thomore will continue working to bring that experience to the next level.
