Sam Mattis Signs Letter of Acceptance

The standout shot and discus thrower will attend Wharton School of Business next year.

It’s that time of the year, when outstanding high school athletes commit to attend and play athletics at college next year.

In East Brunswick, several students have signed letters of acceptance, including track star Sam Mattis.

Sam accepted early action to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. According to his father, Marlon Mattis, his final choice was between Penn, Princeton, Stanford and the College of William and Mary.

“He was also heavily recruited by Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Duke and Brown, but just didn’t feel the connection with those programs,” said Mattis.

“Stanford and William & Mary offered full scholarships but he wanted Wharton, which is the No. 1 ranked undergrad business school, so he'll be down the turnpike.”

Sam is the defending Group IV champ in the winter in the shot. Mattis was the state champ in the discus last spring and is one of the top discus throwers in the entire country.

Mattis won the discus while competing at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina on June 18. His throw of 197' 4" was over 14 feet further than anyone else in the competition. Kyle Long of Pennsylvania placed second with a distance of 182' 9".
