Woman Trapped In East Brunswick Library Bathroom Broke Bones Escaping: Suit

The woman alleges in her suit that the library knew the bathroom stall was defective and dangerous before the incident.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A 75-year-old East Brunswick woman said she was trapped in a bathroom stall at the public library earlier this year and injured herself while trying to get out, according to a lawsuit.

The resident filed a suit against the East Brunswick Public Library, the Township and John Does at the Superior Court of Middlesex County on Sept. 12.

The incident took place on March 18 at the library premises, 2 Jean Walling Civic Center.

According to the suit, the woman was trapped inside the restroom stall and when she finally managed to get the door open, she lost her balance and fell against the wall, striking her head and fracturing her right wrist/arm, and right ankle/foot among other injuries.

The woman alleges in her suit that employees knew the bathroom stall was "defective and dangerous" before the incident.

Shortly after the incident, the library fixed the bathroom stall door, the suit says.

In the lawsuit, the woman says she suffered “permanent loss of bodily functions and/or a permanent disfigurement or dismemberment with medical treatment expenses that exceeded $3,600.”

The resident is suing for damages, interests and cost of the suit.
