Florham Park Brings Back Squirt Sports

U.S. Sports Institute and the Recreation Department host fall sports for kids ages 2 to 5 years.

The Florham Park Recreation Department wants to teach your little ones about sports.

Certified instructors from the U.S. Sports Institute will lead Sports Squirts, Parent & Me Squirts and T-Ball Squirts this fall. These programs are especially designed for children ages 2 to 5 and will teach not only the fundamentals of sports but also teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Two sections of Sports Squirts for ages 3 to 5 will be held this fall on the borough green along Ridgedale Avenue, one at 1:15 p.m. Saturdays and one at 1 p.m. Mondays. The sections begin Sept. 14 and end Oct. 28, and each costs $125.

Each week of Sports Squirts will feature a new sport, including soccer, T-ball, floor hockey, lacrosse and parachute games. According to the Recreation Department website, "All activities promote hand-eye coordination, movement, balance, and most importantly: Fun."

Children ages 2 to 3 may prefer Parent & Me: Sports Squirts on the borough green. The Recreation Department offers two sections this fall, one at 12:15 p.m. Saturdays and one at 3 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 24 to Oct. 29. Each section costs $95.

Like Sports Squirts for the older children, Parent & Me: Sports Squirts features a different sport each week. Lacrosse, soccer, floor hockey and basketball are some of the sports kids have the chance to learn, with help from certified instructors and a parent or caregiver.

For those kids who can't get enough of the ball game there's T-Ball Squirts for ages 3 to 5 on the Borough Hall green. Two sections will be offered on Tuesdays, one at 4 p.m. and one at 5 p.m., from Sept. 17 to Oct. 29. Each section costs $125.

T-Ball Squirts teaches children throwing, catching and hitting, with each week's lesson building on the session before to promote development in skill and understanding of the game. It serves as a great introduction to America's favorite pastime.

Registration is available online through the US Sports Institute website. To learn more contact Adam Lieb of the Florham Park Recreation Department at 973- 410-5390.
