Little Known Fact: How East Hanover Got Its Name
The name dates back to 1720 as a sign of respect to King George I, a British ruler.

EAST HANOVER, NJ —It is a question that perhaps a lot of people have asked, but few know the answer to: How did East Hanover get its name?
For this first installment of Patch's new "Little Known Fact" series, we look at exactly how East Hanover's name came about.
The name comes from the House of Hannover in Germany. The name was given to the Township of Hanover, which included present-day East Hanover, on Dec. 7, 1720 as a sign of respect of King George I of the House of Hannover, a British king.

The original Hanover Township originally covered parts of Morris, Sussex, and Warren counties.
East Hanover was incorporated as a separate township from Hanover in 1928.
