New Rules for 5K Races Pass Florham Park Council

The new law includes insurance requirements and an application to the borough engineer.

The Florham Park Borough Council unanimously passed an ordinance Thursday night setting the rules for race activities in the borough.

The law applies to any organized event of speed or endurance of 5 kilometers or more, and requires organizers to submit an application to the borough engineer for approval. The application must include:

  • The name, address and contact information of the organizer and any officers of the event;
  • a route map;
  • A narrative description of the race and all connected proposed activities;
  • A statement of contingency plans in case of inclement weather.

The engineer will have 10 days to refuse or approve any application. If an application to hold a race in town is refused, the engineer must provide a written explanation of why.

Each application must also include a $150 application fee, plus any permits necessary for use of the borough police, if necessary. The Chief of Police will also be able to review the application and deny it if there is any concern for public safety.

No event can take place between 7 and 9 a.m. or 4 and 6 p.m. on weekdays.
