Make Halloween A Safe Night For Mercer Trick-Or-Treaters: Sheriff

County Sheriff Jack Kemler has shared important safety tips for County residents on Halloween.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ – Halloween is Thursday, and trick-or-treaters in Mercer County are getting ready to don their outfits and collect candy. Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler has shared a safety message with residents, to make Halloween scary for the right reasons.

County residents across the County need to watch out for trick-or-treaters running from house to house in the darkness.

“Trick-or-treaters too often get overexcited and quickly forget about safety. Federal estimates are that children are much more likely to be struck by a motor vehicle on Halloween than on any other date of the year. So, stay on the sidewalks and cross at corners only,” Kemler said.

Also, kids should wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight, glow stick, or a reflective bag. “Dropping a small flashlight or glowstick into a child’s trick-or-treat bag to light the bag up while walking from house to house can also help boost visibility. It’s not a bad idea for accompanying parents to improve their visibility in the darkness, too,” Kemler said.

Lastly, the Sheriff asked all motorists to be extra careful on Halloween evening and try to drive five to ten miles per hour under the speed limit in residential areas.
