MERCER COUNTY, NJ – Mark your calendars. Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler will be hosting a drug take-back day on Saturday, Oct. 28.

This will give residents an opportunity to dispose of unused and expired prescription drugs

The goal is to help residents rid their medicine cabinets of outdated and easily abused opioid painkillers and other unneeded prescription medications.

Residents can drop off any unused and expired prescription pills, no questions asked, by bringing them to the parking lot across from the Mercer County Administration Building at 640 South Broad Street in Trenton between 1010 a.m. and 2 p.m.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is a nationwide effort aimed at providing a safe, convenient, and responsible method for disposing of dangerous, unneeded, and outdated prescription pills from households.

"It is far too easy for accidental use, addiction, and abuse to begin right from your own home medicine cabinet," Kemler said.

The proper disposal of medications also reduces environmental risks, as medicines flushed down the drains can inadvertently enter local drinking water supplies.

“The best and most environmentally safe way to dispose of your old prescriptions is through a drug take-back program," Kemler said. "So, gather up your old prescriptions and make our local communities safer and healthier, too."

The disposal event will collect vape pens and other e-cigarette devices only after the batteries are removed earlier. The drug disposal event will not accept syringes, sharp instruments, liquid medications, or solutions.

The Mercer County Sheriff's Office conducts this community program with the assistance of the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office. For more information, contact the Sheriff's Office Programs Section at 609-278-7159.
