EAST WINDSOR, NJ - A Long Island woman was killed in a Mercer County crash Sunday afternoon after a tire of the SUV in front of her crashed into the front windshield, state police said.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on the New Jersey Turnpike northbound on the inner roadway near milepost 67.6 in East Windsor, a spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police told Patch.

An initial investigation revealed that an Acura MDX was traveling south on the turnpike on the inner roadway when the Acura’s left front wheel somehow separated from the vehicle, the spokesperson said.

The wheel traveled over the center divider and entered the northbound inner roadway, only to hit the front windshield of the northbound Acura RDX, killing the front seat passenger.

The passenger was later identified as Susan Dagrosa, 75, of Port Jefferson, N.Y., state police said. The driver of the RDX was not injured, police added.

The crash remains under investigation.
