EDISON, NJ — Two people are critical and several hospitalized after a four-alarm fire broke out at a senior housing complex in Edison on Tuesday night, Mayor Sam Joshi said.

A fire broke out at the Inman Grove senior housing complex shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday night.

Local and neighboring fire departments responded to the scene and immediately began evacuating the building.

Joshi had initially reported a casualty, but then later said that it was "a miracle that the individual who was transported as a cardiac arrest fatal has regained a pulse but remains in critical condition."

One other person pulled out from the blaze remains in critical condition, Joshi said. Around 200 residents were reportedly displaced and 10 hospitalized.

At least 18 fire engines, four truck companies, two rescues, two air units, and 97 fire fighters responded to this scene.

Joshi said that Gov. Phil Murphy reached out to offer assistance, and the State Office of Emergency Management was also on the scene to help.

"We are working through each individual senior's needs and will make sure every senior is attended to," Joshi said.

The township coordinated overnight stays for residents in need. "I’ve authorized a stay for seniors at a local hotel and will make sure every resident is attended to. Red Cross is also assisting," Joshi said.

The Inman Grove Senior Citizen Residence is a five-floor senior living community located at 1061 Inman Avenue. It had one-and-two-bedroom units with amenities like activity rooms, a library and laundry facilities. The average age of residents living in the housing complex is 85, according to officials.

No other information is currently available on the cause of the fire.
