Sadly, a pet dog and two parakeets died in the fire, firefighters said.

EDISON, NJ — Firefighters rescued two people from a burning apartment building Thursday night, Deputy Fire Chief Andy Toth said.
The fire broke out in the Fox Road apartment complex, and by the time firefighters arrived at 9:45 p.m. thick smoke and flames were coming out of the windows of a first-floor unit, Toth said. An 82-year-old woman and her 65-year-old son were both rescued from that unit, Toth said. They were taken to Robert Wood Johnson in New Brunswick for smoke inhalation treatment.
Two more tenants, one from the first floor unit and another from a second-floor unit, escaped from the building, Toth said.
