EDISON, NJ — The Catholic high school on the corner of Tingley and New Dover Roads in Edison will once again be known as St. Thomas Aquinas High School, after going by Bishop George Ahr for 36 years.

The school was founded as St. Thomas Aquinas in 1969, and was renamed Bishop George Ahr in 1983. The name reversal was announced in the school's website earlier this month.

"The decision to return the name of the school to St. Thomas Aquinas, which better reflects the mission of the school, was made after prayerful consideration and with the best interest of our students – past, present and future – in mind," the school said in a statement. School officials did not elaborate further on their reasoning for changing the name.

While the name change went into effect on July 1, the same day it was announced, the school acknowledged it would take time to convert all the signage, uniforms, and athletic gear. Changes to that branding will take place over the next four years.
