EDISON, NJ — Edison Police Officer Andrew Roy remains hospitalized after a high school student hit him with her car Thursday morning, Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan said on Friday.

Roy, 42, was struck when Claudia Morgan, an 18-year-old senior at J.P. Stevens High School, reversed into him and pinned him between two cars, Bryan said. Roy was taken by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in serious condition with leg and hip injuries; he is now in satisfactory condition, Bryan said.

Other police officers will be taking over Roy's duties as the Student Resource Officer as he recovers. Roy has been with the police department for 16 years.

Morgan attempted to flee the school by car after getting into a fight with an ex-boyfriend in homeroom, an eyewitness told Patch. Roy was attempting to stop Morgan from leaving school grounds when he was struck.

She was arrested in the Stop & Shop parking lot on Inman Ave shortly after fleeing, and charged with aggravated assault, obstruction, and eluding arrest. She was then taken to Rutgers University's Behavioral Health Care facility in Piscataway for an evaluation.

Edison Superintendent Paul Saxon declined to comment on Friday, citing an ongoing investigation, but extended well wishes for Roy.

Although a medical "code blue" was enacted while am ambulance attended to Roy, students were not in danger at any time, Principal Gail Pawlikowski said in an email sent to parents mid-morning on Thursday. A similar email was sent out to students.

"My first concern is for Officer Roy's health and recovery. Our officer sustained serious injuries while trying to calm a troubled young woman and prevent her from leaving school property," Bryan said on Thursday. "Officer Roy demonstrated empathy and dedication to duty."
