EDISON, NJ – The Edison Housing Authority (EHA) recently hosted a grand opening and dedication ceremony for the newly renovated Basketball and Tennis Courts at Robert E. Holmes Gardens.

The basketball and tennis courts largely remained unused for the past 20 years, according to officials. It was then that the EHA made use of the HUD funding to revitalize the space.

The$328,000 project was made possible through the township’s Community Development Block Program and the Edison Housing Authority’s capital improvement program, supported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the renovation of these recreational courts is a perfect example of why this program is in place,” said Alicka Ampry-Samuel, HUD Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey.

“Using HUD funding, the township of Edison directed resources to help the housing authority reimagine a space that will bring families together and provide another exercise option for neighborhood youth. Projects like these are what bring residents together and continue to build community.”

Deborah M. Hurley, Executive Director of Edison Housing Authority said the dedication ceremony marks the beginning of a “renaissance” for the Housing Authority.

“The basketball and tennis courts, untouched for over twenty years, are now ready to serve the community again. The children living here deserve a safe space to play, and it is our responsibility to ensure their safety and well-being,” Hurley said.

In attendance at the dedication ceremony were local leaders, residents and representatives from HUD.

There was a tour of the facility and a community gathering with refreshments and giveaways.

Mayor Sam Joshi said that over $160,000 was allocated from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for the renovations. "And now hundreds of kids will be able to play,” Joshi said.

Councilman John Poyner, who is the Housing Authority Liaison for the Township said, “My wife grew up here, so I’ve been seeing how it was before, and knowing how kids are today, having an opportunity to be outside is great for them and for the families because of health and physical and mental well-being."

Community members can visit and enjoy the new facilities, which are now open and accessible for use.
