EDISON, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Ruthvika who nominated Varenya, a 12th Grade student at John P. Stevens High School, Edison

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Varenya has been working on her Girl Scout Gold Award. She held workshops for children of all ages to teach them about the importance of nutrition and the benefits of clean eating. She got this idea for her project after realizing that many people weren’t aware of why eating healthy is important or how to do it. Countless people don't know the harmful effects of eating unhealthy and highly processed foods. Some are even unaware that the foods they are eating are unhealthy. She wants to raise awareness on this issue and make sure that children are aware of what is good and helpful for their bodies and what is not. Varenya created a website, a blog, and a YouTube channel in addition to the workshops she held. She’s worked extremely hard on this project and just wants to make sure that every child in her community and beyond has access to this valuable information and keeps themselves healthy and strong. Varenya plans to keep posting recipes and tips and hopes that others will use them.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Varenya is very passionate to drive lasting change in the community by educating the local children with good eating habits. She loves helping her community and volunteers regularly as well.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Varenya.
