EDISON, NJ — Independence Day is fast approaching so it's time to find out where you can celebrate in and around Edison and Metuchen. Area events include fireworks, festivals and other Fourth of July fun.

July 4 Festivities For 2024

What: 4th of July Celebration Edison
Where: Papaianni Park, 100 Municipal Blvd, Edison
When: July 4
Mayor Sam Joshi, Edison Council and Recreation Department present the 4th of July Celebration beginning at 3 p.m. and ending at 10 p.m.
Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m., the Township said. There will be kids zone, food, music and vendors. Performing musicians are Big Hix, 80's Revolution Band, The Benjamins. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets.

What: East Brunswick's July 4th Celebration and Fireworks
Where: East Brunswick Community Arts Center
When: July 4, rain date July 5
East Brunswick's July 4 celebration will feature food trucks, DJ Nick Devine and children's entertainers. There will be face paint, balloons, stilt walkers, and more. Rain date is July 5. Expect an epic concert from the East Brunswick Symphony Orchestra before and during the fireworks. Where: Milltown, NJ
When: July 4
Milltown will once again be home to the fishing derby, 5k race, awesome parade, duck race, pizza eating contest, patriotic house contest, bike contest, and music of all kinds. Events begin at 6 a.m. with a fishing derby, culminating with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

What: 2024 Spark In The Park
Where: Immaculate Conception Field, Helmetta
When: July 4
Helmetta and Spotswood will jointly host Spark in the Park, an Independence Day celebration. The family-friendly event will feature food trucks, music, children's entertainment and a drone show. celebrations begin at 5 p.m.

What: Woodbridge Independence Day Fireworks
Where: Alvin P. Williams Park, Woodbridge
When: July 5, rain date July 5
Woodbridge Township's 2024 Independence Day fireworks will be on July 3, with a rain date of July 5. The fireworks will be at Alvin P. Williams Park in Woodbridge. Gates open at 4 p.m. Live music, games, vendors, food trucks and more. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets.

Today, Americans celebrate the birth of a new nation with fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings and barbecues. Celebrations, though, predate by centuries the designation of Independence Day as a federal holiday, which didn’t happen until 1941.

Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia — to adopt the Declaration of Independence.

The first annual commemoration of the nation’s independence was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, while the Revolutionary War was ongoing. Fireworks have been part of Fourth of July festivities since the first celebration in Philadelphia.
